“Show me your ways, O LORD; Teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.” Psalm 25:4-5 NKJV
Two words. Truth and wait. Without truth, our faith would stand on nothing. Without waiting we can miss much of the benefit of truth. I can’t take credit for selecting these two words from Psalm 25:5, but my Bible did it, and what it says encourages me.
You may know that “wait” means “bind together” in the Bible. But consider what that entails. Our soul is woven together with God. This helps to become quiet. It prompts worship and thanks. It allows us to see any bad attitudes we carry. Waiting is a powerful practice if we really wait!
Truth in this verse is ’emet and it means stability, rightness, trustworthiness, and truth. It means firm, permanent, and established. Truth is something we can be confident in and stake our life on.
But here’s a tidbit about ’emet from the “Word Wealth” feature in my Bible*. “Curiously, ’emet is spelled with the first, middle, and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet; thus the rabbis concluded that truth upholds the first and last of God’s creation and everything in between!”
Isn’t it stunning that God would be so involved in every tiny detail, that he would put this clever clue in even the word? And lead someone to figure it out?
“All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth.” Psalm 25:10
