My Writing Story

You can tell when the fruit is ripe because it falls off into your hand.

Getting Started

That’s how if felt when my focused writing began. For years I’d dabbled, but the time came when my daughter shared a writing challenge and I decided to join in.

The requirement: write five-hundred words a day – whatever comes out. This exercise was designed to prime the pump and overcome the fear of writing poorly.

With judging out of the way, my words flowed. On and on, beyond five-hundred words, more each day that passed. As my little vignettes seemed easy enough, I decided to devise a plot that would take the story somewhere and the serious work began.

I did what every writer has to do, I studied the craft and wrote for hours and hours a day. I joined a critique group for feedback and submitted to their wisdom. I made a conscious promise to myself and God – I would not give up. Defeat might come from somewhere, but to declare it over myself was not an option.

My Writing Journey

My journey became about grace and trust as much as putting words together. For a reformed perfectionist and person who lived with low-grade depression much of her life, I could hardly believe how good it felt to see characters and their conflicts come to life. This had to be God’s blessing.

Although I was truly sustained by the energy of joy, there were many tears. What started out so easy did not continue that way as I learned more about good writing. My son’s advice saved me more than once. “Get your thoughts down in some form, no matter how bad it seems, because you can’t work on something that doesn’t exist.”

Yes, writing was like giving birth. Expectancy and hope, love, patience, long labor, and pain filled the process until, like a newborn, my book came forth only to meet professional editors who adopted it and required surgery.

On January 15,  2023, A Future and a Hope was released by Elk Lake Publishers, and joined the competitive market of books.

I freely confess I haven’t been as dedicated to the marketing learning curve as I was to the art of story telling, but the journey hasn’t ended.

I’m working on the sequel, In All Things–trusting God for the ultimate outcome and fulfillment of His purpose in it all.
